Meet Our Talented 2024 Recipients

Warren Northern is the Men of Color in Development 2024 recipient of the Birgit Burton R.I.S.E. Fund

Meet Warren

I would like to receive the $2,000 grant to participate in the Impact Philanthropy Advisor (IPA) program, which is designed to enhance my expertise in philanthropy and fundraising. As the Grants and Funding Development Manager at a small community-based organization, I have been building out a development department from the ground up, and participating in this program would be a key opportunity to deepen my knowledge and strengthen my capabilities in the field.

The IPA program will provide me with advanced skills in strategic philanthropy, donor engagement, and social impact analysis, all of which are critical to both my professional growth and my organization’s success. Our community clinic serves a highly underserved population in South LA, and funding is crucial to maintaining and expanding our services. By developing a more strategic approach to fundraising, I can help our clinic secure more significant and sustainable funding sources, allowing us to provide better health outcomes for the community.

Additionally, learning alongside some of the best in the industry will enable me to bring innovative fundraising strategies back to my organization. Exposure to new techniques and ideas will help me build stronger donor relationships and design more impactful campaigns. This will not only elevate my organization’s development efforts but also position me for future leadership roles in the sector, aligning with my long-term career goal of becoming a Director of Development or eventually a Chief Development Officer.

How do you intend to use the funds?

The funds would cover the costs associated with the IPA program, allowing me to invest in the skills I need to make a greater difference in my role and in the community I serve. Ultimately, receiving this grant would be an investment not just in my career, but also in the sustainability and success of the work we do at my community clinic. I am deeply committed to the nonprofit sector, and I am confident that the IPA program will empower me to lead more effectively, engage donors more meaningfully, and create lasting impact through philanthropy.
